About the Role
InterHab is seeking a seasoned, mission-driven professional to serve as Associate Director, with a strong emphasis on legislative and governmental affairs. As the organization’s deputy leader, this role partners closely with the Executive Director on operations, advocacy, and administration, while taking the lead on legislative priorities such as bill tracking, testimony preparation and delivery, stakeholder engagement, and rapid response communications. The ideal candidate will excel in a small, fast-paced office, bringing adaptability, strong multitasking skills, and a hands-on approach to both policy initiatives and event coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Legislative & Government Affairs
- Lead day-to-day legislative work: track bills/committees, analyze policy, and prepare talking points and testimony
- Build and maintain relationships with legislators, agency leaders, MCOs, member advocates, partner organizations, and other stakeholders
- Coordinate weekly GA meetings, and organize key events (GA Retreat, Advocacy Day, legislative reception)
- Drive grassroots mobilization and action alerts
- Support PAC planning and compliance
- Represent InterHab in hearings/meetings; communicate timely updates to members
Operations & Administration
- Plan association meetings, support Board of Directors meetings, and other meetings as needed
- Drive membership growth and serve as the primary contact for member inquiries
- Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational priorities and time-sensitive needs
Leadership & Strategy
- Assume delegated executive responsibilities in the absence of the Executive Director
- Work alongside the Executive Director on strategic direction and government relations
- Cultivate relationships with key partners to advance shared goals and expand the association’s influence
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, nonprofit management, political science, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in government relations, association or nonprofit leadership, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated success in legislative strategy, policy advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and public testimony
- Strong communication skills—able to write concise briefs, testimony, and member updates, and build effective relationships across diverse stakeholders
- Highly organized and proactive; able to juggle multiple priorities in a small, fast-paced office environment
- Flexibility to work extended hours during legislative session and travel within Kansas as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience coordinating events, including legislative receptions or large advocacy days
- Familiarity with PAC operations, compliance, and grassroots campaign management
- Proficiency with Office/Google tools and comfort using CRMs, spreadsheets, or other member management systems
