2025 InterHab Live Courses: Consent and People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

May 13, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

About the Course:

The rate of sexual abuse among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) is staggering. This population is seven times more likely to be abused than the general population, and women with I/DD are 12 times more likely to be abused. Many of these individuals don’t receive sexuality education that is cognitively accessible to them, and for many other reasons, this puts them at risk. To change those statistics, there are many areas where professionals can make a difference, including learning effective ways to teach consent education to people with I/DD. Plus, we will explore ways to assess one’s ability to consent.

About the Presenter:

Katherine McLaughlin, M.Ed., AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator, is the Founder, CEO, and Lead Trainer for Elevatus Training. She has been a sexuality educator and trainer for over 25 years. As a national expert on sexuality and intellectual and developmental disabilities, she trains professionals and parents, as well as people with IDD, to become sexual self-advocates and peer sexuality educators.
