Hot Topics in Nutrition: Choosing Appropriate Infant Milks and Formulas (Part 1: Breastfeeding)

June 12, 2012 | 9:00am - 11:00am CST | Webinar Series (Session 3 of 8)
Join Dr. Cathy Breedon, Doctor of Nutrition at Sanford Medical Center, for her 2012 Hot Topics in Nutrition monthly webinar series! This is a monthly webinar series that gives participants the tools they need in assessing real-life nutrition applications in their day-to-day jobs and lives. Dr. Breedon is a Perinatal/Pediatric Nutrition specialist and long-time supporter of encouraging the practice of breast feeding.  However, there are some unique nutrition considerations that are important for assuring nutrient adequacy of both the nursing mother and her infant.  It is often assumed that mothers produce milk with appropriate amounts of all the nutrients the baby needs and that is often true for many nutrients like protein and certain minerals.  This may even take place at the mother's expense, but it is now known that some nutrients will be inadequate in the milk if themother's intake is inadequate.  If her own diet was also inadequate in these nutrients during pregnancy, our assumptions about the adequacy of the infant's nuritional stores at birth must be re-evaluated. Hot Topics in Nutrition: Choosing Appropriate Infant Milks and Formulas (Part 2: Baby Formulas)

July 10, 2012 | 9:00am - 11:00am CST | Webinar Series (Session 4 of 8)
Infant formulas come in many varieties and most infants will do fine on whatever standard milk-based or soy-based product one happens to choose. There are some differences, however, in the form of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that are important for individual babies. This session will address these differences as they relate to the common problems like constipation, diarrhea, spitting up, and allergic responses. It will also describe some special products or formula adjustments for babies with unique needs, such as preterm birth (post-hospital), poor growth, and those taking certain chronic medications. Join Dr. Cathy Breedon, Doctor of Nutrition at Sanford Medical Center and Perinatal/Pediatric Nutrition specialist for this in-depth session on infant formulas. Read more.
